Minimalist College Packing List

Happy August everyone! Wow, can you believe that summer is almost over? August officially marks BACK TO SCHOOL season! I know that many of you are starting or going back to college in mid-August.

The summer before college, I spent my days researching what to pack. I looked at every Pinterest packing list there was on the Internet. Looking back, some of the packing lists were very excessive. While an “ULTIMATE guide to college packing” may be helpful. It can be easy to go overboard with buying dorm things.

After two years of living in a dorm, I have a pretty good grasp on what college students NEED to pack. Instead of what they would LIKE to pack. I admit that I overpacked for my freshman year. When it came time to move out, I looked at many of the items hidden under beds and in closets asking myself “did you even use this?”

I want to share with you a packing list f items that you will actually need for college. These are the bare necessities you will need to live comfortably in your dorm room. You are more than welcome to add or take out whatever fits your lifestyle. These are the items I needed for my lifestyle in college. And I can vouch that you will not need an ironing board in your cramped 8′ x 10′ dorm room. Save yourself the space and money by reading my minimalist packing list for college!

  1. I’m going to assume that you left off the category of clothing on purpose; otherwise, a few things came to mind while perusing your list (which is very good, btw). They are as follows…

    Bedding: a set of sheets
    Desk: task light
Personal Hygiene: hand soap or hand sanitizer
    Electronics: headphones and/or earbuds
Cleaning: a small dust broom & pan and trash bags to fit the provided trash can
    Kitchen: a dish towel
    Laundry: hangers
Organization: blue tack (rather than thumb tacks) and hooks (either over-the-door or a selection of Command adhesive hooks)
Health & Safety: a small first aid kit with a few single-dose meds for common ailments

      • Hey, no problem. I’ve been watching my daughter obsess over her packing list for the last couple of weeks (and doing a bit of obsessing myself). My suggestions are things we talked about and decided were worth adding. We both really like your list, and it’s an excellent resource for keeping things lean. Dorm rooms are TINY, and tthe more cluttered they are, the harder they are to keep clean and neat. Best to keep things simple. You can always add items as the year progresses. Just don’t forget that what you move in, you also have to move out! 🙂

      • I’m glad to hear the list was helpful! Dorm rooms are smaller than you think. So it’s great to bring only the essentials items when moving in. You can always add more items as the year goes on. Best of luck to your daughter starting college!
